Choose Quality Ingredients

When making guacamole, It’s always best to start with quality ingredients. I’m a big fan of using Hass avocados because their taste is superior, but you can use whatever is available as long as they’re ripe and free of blemishes. Check to make sure they’re not too ripe or too firm. You’ll know when the avocados are ready if you press the ends and they give in a little.

  • Avocados – choose ripe avocados with no blemishes
  • Juice from 1 Lime – fresh lime juice is best, the bottled type should be avoided
  • Seasoning – sea salt, ground cumin, and minced garlic adds a nice kick
  • Red Onion – you can use white or sweet onion if desired
  • Cilantro – brightens up the guac, but parsley can be substituted if necessary
  • Cherry Tomatoes – you can use cherry tomatoes or a diced Roma tomato
  • Jalapeño Pepper – amp up the dip with this optional ingredient

Tips for Success

  • Use the freshest ingredients possible.
  • Always use lime juice that is squeezed directly from a lime, not from a bottle.
  • Choose ripe avocados.
  • Mash avocado with a fork to get the best consistency, then add other ingredients.
  • If tomatoes are too juicy, drain them with paper towels to avoid a watery dip.
  • When storing, drizzle guacamole with lime juice, then press plastic wrap directly onto the top of it to prevent brown spots from forming.

Serving Ideas

This easy guacamole recipe is great as a dip or a topping, which means it’s one of the most versatile spreads you can create! Here are some serving ideas:

  • Make Avocado Toast – spread it on sourdough toast and top with feta
  • Scoop it on Tacos – crunchy or soft tacos love guac!
  • Top it on Salads – try adding it to Taco or Fajita salads
  • Serve it as an Appetizer – serve it with nachos or tortilla chips
  • Add it to Protein – goes great on top of burgers, fish or grilled chicken

Make it Yours

  • Add Spice – try cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes or diced green chilies for more zest.
  • Bacon – some folks like chopped bacon in their guacamole, although I’m not a fan
  • Sauces – anything from sriracha to soy sauce is fair game
  • Creaminess – throw a few tablespoons of softened cream cheese or sour cream in the mix and blend it in the food processor until creamy

Recipe FAQ

Can guacamole be made ahead?

You can make guacamole up to 2 days ahead. Simply store the guac in a airtight container, smooth it down with the back of a spoon, and sprinkle lime juice over the top. Place a sheet of plastic wrap over the surface of the dip, then press down firmly to get rid of any air bubbles. Close the lid tightly and store in the refrigerator.

Is it okay to eat if it turns brown?

Yes, as long as it’s up to 2 days old. If it’s older than that, throw it out. Or, simply scrape the top layer off the guac to expose the green avocado underneath.

How can I make avocados ripen faster?

Add unripe avocados to a paper bag and put a ripe banana in with them. Close the bag and wait. They will ripen in 4 to 5 days.

Storage Guide

Leftovers: Store leftovers in an airtight container with plastic wrap pressed down on the surface for up to 2 days. After that, guacamole can start to mold, so be sure to check it carefully and discard it once it turns brown.

Freezing: You can store guacamole in an airtight vacuum-sealed bag for up to 3 months in the freezer. Thaw in the refrigerator while still in the bag and serve immediately once completely thawed.

This is by far the best guacamole I’ve ever made. Usually it has no flavor but the combo of spices and jalapeño really gives this dip a kick.
