Get the Scoop!
- Classic Recipe – This popular 7-layer dip is a taco lover’s dream with a spooky Halloween twist!
- Take Shortcuts – Prep is fast and easy when you use store-bought shortcuts.
- Crowd Pleaser – Great centerpiece for any Halloween party spread.
The first time I made this layered taco dip was for a neighborhood Halloween party, and it was a huge hit! Kids loved the spiderweb on top, adults loved the layers of flavor, and I loved that it took me only 30 minutes to put together! It’s now my go-to Halloween appetizer! 🎃
To create the perfect Halloween party spread, add a bowl of Whipped Feta with Roasted Tomatoes (that can be made to look like a crime scene), and a serving of Fluffy Oreo Dip (that can double as a graveyard or become the dirt for gummy worms to thrive).

What You’ll Need to Make It
- refried beans – spreadable base that begins the 7-layers
- guacamole – get it premade from the deli to save time
- sour cream – mix with taco seasoning, and save some for creating the spiderweb
- taco seasoning – adds classic zesty flavor to the sour cream
- sharp cheddar cheese – finely shredded creates a smoother topping so you can easily draw the spiderweb
- cherry tomatoes – sliced for pops of color
- green onions – diced for fresh flavor
- black olives – sliced and drained
- plastic spiders – for decoration only, not edible!

Step by Step Instructions
- Spread refried beans evenly in the bottom of a 10-inch square serving dish or round pie plate.
- Smooth guacamole on top of the beans.
- Mix 12 ounces of sour cream with taco seasoning and spread over the guacamole layer, reserving 4 ounces of sour cream for drawing the spiderweb.
- Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the sour cream mixture.
- Create a border with sliced tomatoes, green onions, and black olives along the bottom edges of the dish.
- Place reserved sour cream in a piping bag or plastic bag with the corner snipped off and pipe a spiderweb design over the cheese. Add plastic spiders to the web for decoration.

Favorite Pairings
This fun appetizer goes great with tortilla chips, corn chips, or veggie sticks like celery, carrots and bell peppers. I like to serve it with a side of Fire Roasted Salsa and Cottage Cheese Taco Dip for the perfect party spread.
For beverages, pair Halloween 7-Layer Dip with sparkling apple cider, spicy margaritas, or a festive punch served in a cauldron with dry ice underneath! Spooky!

Make It Yours
- Use salsa instead of guacamole for a saucier layer.
- Mix the refried beans with hot sauce for more flavor.
- Swap black olives for sliced jalapeños if you like extra heat.
- Add seasoned ground beef between the beans and guacamole for a heartier dip.
- Don’t want to make a spiderweb? Serve this 7-Layer Dip without decorations and it will still get rave reviews!
Dip Tips
- Test your spider web drawing on a paper plate before creating it on your dip.
- Using a condiment bottle is an easier way to make the spiderweb. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect! (Mine sure isn’t!) 🕷️
- If you don’t have a piping bag to make the decorations, use a zip-top bag and snip off a tiny corner.
- Pulse block cheddar in a food processor for super fine shreds that layer evenly.
- Chill the dip for at least 30 minutes before serving so the layers set.

Recipe FAQ
Yes, prepare it up to 24 hours in advance. Wait to add the spider decorations until right before serving.
7-layer dip is best served cold, making it perfect for parties where it can sit out on the snack table on top of a layer of ice.
Sure, if you have a great recipe, go for it! But, I like to use premade because it saves time.
Storage Guide
Cover leftovers tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 3 days. The guacamole may darken slightly, but the flavors will still be delicious.
If you keep everything in an airtight container, the guac will last longer.
Avoid freezing, as dairy and guacamole don’t thaw well.
