Ingredients You’ll Need
Here’s what you’ll need to make this popular cream cheese dip recipe. Quantities are listed in the printable recipe card.
- Cream Cheese: Choose low fat, regular, or fat free cream cheese that’s softened.
- Powdered Sugar: Adds sweetness while keeping the texture smooth.
- Fresh Lime Juice: Provides bright citrus flavor and that signature margarita taste.
- Lime Zest: Adds extra lime flavor and freshness.
- Tequila: Gives the recipe its touch of sass.
- Orange Liqueur: Adds a subtle orange note that complements the lime.
- Vanilla Extract: Rounds out the flavors and adds a touch of warmth.
- Fine Salt: Balances the sweetness and enhances the citrus flavors.
- Whipped Topping: Makes the mixture light, fluffy, and easy to scoop.

DIP TIP: Some recipes call for butter, but I cut the fat in half by using extra cream cheese instead. You can also make this a skinny recipe by using fat free cream cheese as a substitute. 😄
How to Make Margarita Dip
- Beat the softened cream cheese in a medium mixing bowl with a hand mixer until smooth and creamy, about 1 to 2 minutes.
- Add the powdered sugar and beat again until smooth. Add the lime zest, lime juice, tequila, orange liqueur, vanilla extract, and salt. Beat until the mixture is creamy and evenly combined.
- Fold in the whipped topping using a rubber spatula until no streaks remain.
- Transfer the mixture to a serving bowl and sprinkle additional lime zest over the top. Cover and chill before serving. Serve cold with salted pretzels or your favorite dippers.

Favorite Dippers
Pretzel crisps or salted pretzels are the dipper of choice because they bring out the flavors of lime and tequila in this creamy margarita dip. Try making your own Pretzel Bites, or give these ideas a whirl…
- Graham crackers
- Vanilla wafers
- Apple slices
- Pineapple chunks
- Shortbread cookies
- Strawberries
- Butter cookies
Variations
- For an alcohol-free version, replace the tequila and orange liqueur with the same amount of orange juice.
- Use homemade whipped cream instead of whipped topping. Whip it to stiff peaks before folding it into the mixture.
- Add extra lime zest for a stronger citrus flavor.
- Serve in mini dessert cups layered with crushed pretzels or graham crackers for fun little trifles.

Helpful Tips
- Zest the lime before juicing it. This makes zesting much easier and helps keep the zest light and fluffy.
- Use fresh lime juice instead of bottled lime juice for the best flavor.
- Make sure the cream cheese is fully softened before mixing to avoid lumps.
- If the dip seems too soft, chill it a little longer before serving.
- Keep the mixture refrigerated until ready to serve, especially during warm weather.

Recipe FAQ
Yes. Replace the tequila and orange liqueur with orange juice. The flavor will be slightly different, but it will still have a delicious margarita inspired taste.
Margarita mix is not recommended because it can make the recipe too sweet and too thin. Fresh lime juice and tequila provide a fresher and more balanced flavor.
The cream cheese was likely too cold. Let it soften completely at room temperature before beating it until smooth.

Storage Guide
- Store leftover margarita dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- You can prepare the mixture up to one day in advance and keep it refrigerated until serving.
- For best texture, keep it chilled until serving.
